AZCARATE EMILIA
The new work by this artist is the result of her research on what was known as?pintura de castas? in the eighteenth century, a phenomenon in culture and art that arose mainly in Mexico and Peru, portraying the changes which took place when the various races mixed together (indigenous, African, and Spanish).0Through a color code in which each primary color represents each race, and each mixture is portrayed by using different percentages of these colors, along with an alphabet coded in the style of a hieroglyphic, these paintings convey what casta painting conceals within, in the words of Emilia Azcárate.0The book includes texts by Juan Carlos Ledezma (about the artist?s painting), Ilona Katzew (about pintura de castas) and Philip Ball (on the color theory).
